Graduate Research in Solar and Stellar Astrophysics
The HiROS research group, which is part of the School of Physics and Astronomy, offers opportunities for research in the helio and asteroseismology areas: the study of the Sun and stars by observation and analysis of their natural modes of vibration. Places are available for PhD (3 year) and MPhil (1 year) degrees. We are involved in the NASA Kepler mission, as part of the Kepler Asteroseismic Science Consortium (KASC). The KASC will be using data from Kepler to conduct asteroseismology of the exoplanet host stars, in order to characterise those stars and place tight constraints on the exoplanet radii and ages. We are particularly interested to hear from students who would like to work on PhDs in this area.
The group runs its own world-wide network of automated helioseismic observatories - the Birmingham Solar-Oscillations Network (BiSON) - which provides round-the-clock monitoring of the `5-minute' modes of oscillation of the Sun. The group also pursues a vigorous program of data analysis and exploitation, using its own and other data (for example from ESA/NASA SOHO spacecraft and the NSO GONG network).
