Stars, the Sun, and Exoplanets:
Our research spans the fields of helioseismology and
asteroseismology, the study of the interior of the Sun and stars by
observation of natural modes of oscillation of the stars.
In asteroseismology, we have leading roles in the international
Kepler Asteroseismic Science Consortium (KASC), which is using data
from the NASA Kepler Mission to study solar-type stars and red
giants, including exoplanet host stars.
In helioseismology, we run the Birmingham Solar-Oscillations
Network (BiSON). This world-wide network of six remote, ground-based
telescopes provides round-the-clock monitoring of the globally
coherent, core-penetrating modes of oscillation of the Sun. BiSON is
funded by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).
